Mission Statement
The mission of I.E.S. is to provide a safe and stable learning environment that inspires and prepares all students for a lifetime of learning and success in a global society.

Intervention
#1
Steps of the writing process will be used to improve writing proficiency.
1. Management: Teachers develop effective strategies to manage the writing process in their classrooms.
2. Student Independence: Students understand and can independently demonstrate the steps of the writing process.
3. Publishing: Teachers provide opportunities for student to celebrate by publishing their writing through venues and traditions such as the Author's Chair, Young Authors Day, portfolios, intranet, Showcase, etc.

As our students engage in the writing process we will utilize text and literature to model and apply the primary traits of the 6+1 Analytic Model.
1. Ideas: The students will use a variety of experience to generate ideas through brainstorming.
2. Organization: The students will learn organization through a variety of tools such as graphic organizers, outlining, sequencing… to introduce, transition and conclude a piece of writing.
3. Voice : The students will develop voice that is appropriate for narrative, expository, and persuasive modes for a variety of audiences and points of view.

As our students engage in the writing process we will utilize text and literature to model and apply the secondary traits of the 6+1 Analytic Model.
1. Conventions: The students will practice grammar and mechanics through DOL, paragraph editing, peer editing and teacher conferencing of student.
2. Word Choice: From the use of literature and thesauri, students will generated and apply a variety of powerful words into their writing by utilizing effective adjectives, strong verbs, and figurative expressions such as similes and metaphors.
3. Sentence Fluency: The student will learn to develop smoothly flowing writing by analyzing sentence structure to improve beginnings, transitions, sentence length and word choice.

1. Previewing: Utilize pre-reading, previewing non-fiction content, predicting; checking back.
2. Background: Increase comprehension by building background knowledge and vocabulary.
3. Mental Organzation: Use graphic organizers to help students organize content and thinking.
4. Connection and Transfer: Ask questions or provide activities that help the student connect to self and the world through discussion, written response, art, or reflections

Increase quantity of time spent on age-appropriate independent reading of a rich array of relevant, authentic, purposeful text.
1. Many Ways of Reading : Students will utilize many ways of reading a variety of texts: alone, pairs, parent/child, teacher/student, cross-grade, reading around the room, picture reading, home read aloud/read along.
2. Many Type of Print : Students will be offered many types of print including a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction genre as as authentic tex (e.g. reference materials, advertising, newspapers, cereal boxes, train schedules) matched to learner's abilities, interests, culture and learning preferences.
3. Cultivate Enthusiasm: Teachers will strive to cultivate enthusiasm for reading. Students will be provided a choice in the text that they select (e.g. Literature Circles, AR, CCR) including texts in their primary languages.
